Why Tank Maintenance is necessary for your health and wellbeing.

It is recommended to clean your water tanks at-least bi-annually and before summer due to bacteria promoted by the heat in the water. Depending on your tanks situation and the gutters that connect to the rainwater tank sometimes a cleaning will be needed every year. We would like to let you know that we do clean gutters upon request if we find the tank or tanks are saturated by gutter materials such as leaves etc. For gutter cleaning we use SkyVac which is specifically designed for cleaning gutters, high ceilings & long-reach spaces. The system consists of a vacuum, long carbon fiber vacuum poles, a video camera and a carbon fiber telescopic pole.

gutter cleaning

  • If you have an above ground tank, you need a screen cover. This will stop any leaf litter that’s passed through your gutter guards or downpipe screens from getting into your tank and act as a barrier to any potential vermin that gain access to the top of your tank also don’t forget to clean your screen cover occasionally! If your screen is bolted in, you can buy removable tank screens that fit on top of your screens and are easy to remove and clean. You can also get a ladder or climb the existing built in ladder to just check the water in the tank occasionally.
  • We also recommend that a filtration system be connected to the rainwater tank to also filter out any foreign agents to make 100% sure that your water is as clean as possible when using it for drinking purposes. Our specialised rainwater Filtration system is a proven performer as we will only use specific brands that have been proven and tested. In regards to pressure pumps that are being used to put the tank water into showers and toilets it is also another reason to keep your tank clean due to sediments of dirt or sand getting in to the pump which we do not want to happen.
  • A part of the maintenance of a Rainwater tank is also testing the water PH levels which can be done when we are also on site before the cleanse and after the cleanse of the tank. we will have the specific formulas to bring the water back in to the recommended PH level as well as purifying the water when everything is completed. It is also said that Metal Tanks start to get the rusty look due to not having regular maintenance and cleaning as the PH drops to about 5.5 which causes a slow rust of the metal tanks, this can be easily rectified if the Metal tanks are well taken care of.
  • it is also recommended to clean out your gutters just before the end of a dry hot period but if this can not be done then it is recommended to get a first flush diverter (or Roof Washers) capture the first most contaminated rainwater from the roof and gutters, automatically diverting the subsequent cleaner rainwater to the storage tank. It is also recommend to clean out the flush diverter after the downpour so it can be re-utlized and used again without getting any blockage in the diverter itself.  The first flush of water from the roof can contain amounts of bacteria from decomposed insects, bird and animal droppings and concentrated tannic acid. It may also contain sediments, water borne heavy metals and chemical residues, all of which are undesirable elements to have in a water storage system.
